Whitstable Labour Club is a private members club and venue open to Labour Party members and those sympathetic to the Labour movement.
This well loved local institution is now managed by Sue Foreman and her partner Mark Wyver. The Labour and Co-operative Parties and the local branch of CAMARA meet here regularly and we are the venue for The Whitstable Folk Club. Sympathetic charities and campaigns are encouraged to use our facilities. Regular professional music is provided at the Club and similar events are organised for campaigns and charities.

History The club was originally sited under the arches of the railway bridge in Belmont Road which it leased from Railtrack. Part of the building was once the waiting room and ticket office for the old town railway station, and later a pigeon club. The building was very damp and dingy and suffered from rain water coming in through the roof. Members got to know the times of the trains rumbling over head. The building is now a new restaurant called the Whistlestop which opened in April 2004.

The Labour Club was originally founded by Labour Party members to
“promote and support the Labour Party and its policies, principles and values and to provide recreation, entertainment and a sociable venue for interest groups for the benefit of its members, visitors and guests.”
Given this background and base the Labour Club Committee has agreed that all approved Labour Party members qualify to be full members of the Club and therefore their memberships have been approved forthwith. In order to confirm their wish to access their entitlement to use the services of the Club and participate in its activities they should pay their £2 annual subs to the Labour Club and have that payment recorded at the bar on the next occasion they are in the Club. A membership card will be left at the Club within two weeks of that date. This confirmation is immediate in effect and will entitle the member to full services and rights on the day and thereafter. Qualifying Labour Party members are those recorded by the Party and reflected in the records of membership held by the Canterbury, Herne Bay and Whitstable branches. If you are a local Labour Party member, when in Whitstable, you and your guests are fully entitled to use the facilities of the Club as indicated above. So try it soon! |
